Holiday Spotlight on Man Cave Placerville, Unique Gifts, Great Stories, and All Things Man at 254 Main Street

Last Updated 12/16/2021

We're pleased to include Man Cave Placerville in our Holiday Spotlight Series.

We're spotlighting many of the unique businesses that make up Downtown Placerville so that you can learn of the opportunities you have to shop locally and support local businesses, their families, and ultimately our community.

We connected with Tod Pickett to learn more about Man Cave Placerville at 254 Main Street.

How would you describe your business to a friend?

Man Cave is the place to go in Placerville if you need a gift for that person that has everything.

Sports Fan, Beer lover, Old Guy, She Shed owner...if you have a herd or special person to to shop for, Man Cave Placerville can help you find something unique.

Why did you start your business? What do you love most about it?

I love helping people find a special gift for someone, whether it be a custom sign for a car lover or a rookie card for that card collector.

I have always loved finding unique and nostalgic items.

I would consider myself a "picker". Knowing other people like cool, unusual things it became apparent that I may be able to help others get cool stuff they are looking for. Plus, I get the thrill of the hunt.

What is something you wish people knew about your business?

I love telling the story of how I find my merchandise.

If you come in my store you will get a story of some kind from me.

I really love my store, but I like helping people even more.

What is a common question you get or what is your most popular product or service?

The most common question I have in my store is, “Where do you get all this stuff??” My answer is that the stuff sometimes finds me.

What is the biggest compliment your business has received?

I would have to say the biggest compliment I have ever received was from a couple in England that I met outside my front door. We struck up a conversation about Placerville and it turned into a 45 minute talk about how small the world actually is (it was slow that day).

A few days later I got an email from them and they told me that in all their travels I was one of the most interesting and nicest people they had ever come across. That made my week.

I love talking to people from around the world and downtown Placerville is a great place to do just that.

Why did you choose to be on Main Street in Placerville?

I really like the downtown “vibe” and the unique stores that make up the Downtown Business Association.

Do you have any upcoming events or specials people should know about?

I will be open 7 days a week from now until Christmas. I have a number of daily and weekly special on Neon Signs, Sports clothing, and Man Cave items.

Are you involved with any local non-profits or community groups you would like to give a shout out to?

My wife Judy and I have the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Fund through the El Dorado Community Foundation. We have given away over $110,000 in scholarships to High School seniors at the 6 local schools in El Dorado County.

We also do baskets of hope for newly diagnosed cancer patients and help fund mammograms for those who can’t afford them through the Marshal Foundation.

Personally, I am very involved with Special Olympics and Coaching. This year I was chosen as the Head Coach for the Northern California Swim Team at the National Championships in Seattle. It was a great time.
